Inside is the Discovery Center and outside are trails/boardwalk with stream, etc. First, the inside: Discovery center has interpretive exhibits about the Great Bay Estuary and the amazing creatures that call it home. Hands-on estuarine touch tank as they learn about lobsters, horseshoe crabs, mud snails and more. Interactive displays about salt marsh farming, salmon migration, plankton, tides and research on the Bay, allow children and adults alike to learn about the Estuary. For the wee ones, add puzzles and a stuffy corner with a mini-stage setup and a costume corner.
Outside are landscaped grounds including a stream with a trail and boardwalk where visitors can explore a variety of habitats including upland hardwood forests, freshwater wetlands, salt marsh and mudflats. Interpretive signage allows visitors to learn about the diverse habitats found along Great Bay. These include replicas of a 19th century Gundalow and a Native American camp. Birders find the Discovery Center an excellent location to watch for Great Bay’s wintering eagle population, migratory warblers, waterfowl, and nesting pairs of osprey.
Hours: May – Sept. open Wed.-Sun. 10 am – 4 pm and weekends in October. Grounds are open from dawn to dusk year-round.
