One of the last remaining American “Estate Gardens” that were popular from 1890-1940, Fuller Gardens continues to thrive, with over 1,700 rose bushes, huge perennial borders, English Garden, flowering trees, an outstanding dahlia collection, a Japanese garden and more, separated into four main areas, all of which are maintained the old fashioned way (no power tools used). Interesting statuary throughout. Plant sales with cuttings from the gardens take place from time to time, and while it’s not acres and acres, it’s intense, therefore a place to bring cameras and enjoy sights and scents.
The estate was owned by Alvan T. Fuller, successful businessman who also served in the Massachusetts legislature, represented the Bay State in Congress, and then went from Lieutenant Governor to Governor of Mass. Interestingly, neither he nor his wife spent much time in the gardens but they both took great joy in the public stopping to enjoy it.
Hours: Open rain or shine from 10:00 am–5:30pm, mid-May through mid-October, or until the first hard frost.
Admission: Adults $9.00, Seniors: $8.00, Students with identification: $6.00, Children under 12: $4.00, carried infants: no charge. Groups (over 10): $7.50.
