We’ve always loved this historic building since you can picture it as the stagecoach stop that it was in the early 1800s, and though the property has had a restaurant in it since we moved to New Hampshire in the late 80s, Buckley’s has made the best use of the building’s layout and earns the “great steaks” in its name. I made the mistake of ordering The Cowboy Steak (only considered to be such until I realized my grocery bill was going to be light that whole week as a result). It was frickerin’ huge, and I will say it was also the best steak I think I’ve ever had, before or since. Their beef is the highest quality, Midwestern-fed, aged and cooked over a hardwood fire. Atmosphere in the dining room was the kind of comfortable where white tablecloths don’t make you feel formality-challenged, but just add to a very nice dining experience. Really excellent all the way around.
Riddle’s Tavern carries the name of Isaac Riddle who built the original stage coach stop, and it’s a sunken room that has its own cozy-elegant charm along with a comfort food menu, adding burgers, meatloaf and other casual fare in addition to being able to order from the main menu if seating in The Tavern area.
Hours: Open for Dinner Tuesday – Thursday 5-9 pm; Friday – Saturday 5-10 pm; Sunday 4-9pm. Tavern opens at 4pm.
